Seminar : Data Centers

We were honored to welcome our special guest Khun Kasem Ninchareon, Executive Director at Acumen Consulting (Thailand) Co., Ltd, who provided us with insights on the world of Data Centers. With the fast-paced development of information-based platforms and growing needs from all industries and businesses for greater data granularity and analytics, Data Centers are rapidly becoming an in-demand building typology. What sets Data Centers apart from other building typologies is the long list of pre-requisites set forth by various international standards like Uptime or BICSI, making the task of creating a Data Center from scratch an arduous and challenging one. From design guidelines to planning principles to sustainability, Khun Kasem opened our eyes to the possibility of creating Data Centers that optimize performance while addressing energy and environmental concerns.

Seminar : Smart Architects and Smart Cities

We had the pleasure of being entertained by Dr. Non Akraprasertkul, Senior Expert at DEPA, who introduced a radically different way of looking at Smart Cities with the following takeaways:

  • People come first. Technology comes second. Daily activities should be augmented by technology, not dictated by it.
  • Public-Private Partnerships are useful if they promote development that is sustainable and people-centric. Hence, People-Public-Private Partnership is the best model for all stakeholders.
  • Digital solutions in the physical realm should be geared towards enhancing living, working, playing, staying and learning for people from all age groups and socioeconomic backgrounds.
    Additional food for thought:
  • Whole cities depend on urban mobility and therefore should provide proper means of getting around.
  • 15-minute cities that focus on walkability can create seamless transitions and moments using a combination of physical and digital infrastructure.
  • The Metaverse is the ultimate “zero-minute city” that everyone has access to and can be used to expand horizons.

HAPPY FRIYAY Episode 2 : World Expo 2022, Dubai

Our design team went to visit our beloved Thai Pavilion and came back with fascinating takeaways on 3 pavilions that best represented and expressed the Expo’s 3 key themes – Mobility, Sustainability and Opportunity.

  • The Mobility Pavilion by Foster + Partners was an outstanding physical manifestation of dynamism and movement – fitting with the name Alif (which symbolizes the beginning of progress and new horizons). Such manifestation was evident in the use of highly-reflective stainless steel as the facade’s cladding material, which was inspired by the aerodynamic quality of aircraft wings.
  • The Sustainability Pavilion by Grimshaw Architects brought people closer to nature by identifying the possibilities for making environmentally-conscious choices. The interactive energy trees that harvest solar energy is one of many features that prove that sustainability in the most strenuous climates and environments is indeed possible. The pavilion itself is slated to become a science museum after the end of the Expo, symbolizing the far-reaching implications of sustainability.
  • The Opportunity Pavilion by AGi Architects amalgamates people from different backgrounds and cultures using the physical realm as a collaborative and interactive platform. The “plaza”, a ubiquitous and universal urban typology, becomes the center for immersive expositions that unite ideas and experiences.
We would like to thank all contributors from every pavilion who made the World Expo 2022 experience a memorable one. See you all in Osaka 2025!
